The 6 Days to Amazon Challenge

Good morning everyone!

Just in case you didn't see my Twitter or Facebook update on Monday morning, I had an idea last weekend for a new writing challenge, and I would like to share that with you right now.

Last week, I came across a documentary that quickly became one of my favorites: 6 Days to Air: The Making of South Park. It's a look behind the scenes of the crew responsible for bringing South Park to Comedy Central every week, and it gives unprecedented access to the writers' room where Trey Parker, Matt Stone and others hash out potential ideas for the next episode of the show.

Yes, the next episode. The day after an episode airs, they start working on the story for the next one. It's the most amazing look at a deadline that I've ever seen, and it definitely made me yearn for pressure like that.

So an idea came to mind. I know a lot of my fellow writers feel the same way about how a deadline keeps them going. So what if we all participated in a special challenge to create either a short story or - if you are so daring - a novella in the same timeframe that Trey, Matt, et al take to create a single 22-minute-long animated episode of their award-winning show?

Yes, I'm talking about outlining, writing, editing and finally uploading your stories in only six days! The Six Days to Amazon Challenge!

Now, some may consider this a knock-off of the National Novel Writing Challenge, but it isn't. NaNoWriMo is all about just laying down the foundation for your novel in just thirty days. That's not the case here. You're doing it all in the allotted time.

The only rule is that you will work on a story that you haven’t written yet. If there’s been a story that’s been sitting in the back of your head for a while, but you haven’t gone through with it, then the “6 Days to Amazon” Challenge is for you!

The challenge will take place from August 1 to August 6, so if you're interested, please post your name & e-mail address in the comments section below so I can send you any and all updates as the challenge date draws closer. There will also be a new section on my website that will feature everyone’s progress so we can all cheer each other on as we race through to the deadline.

Oh, and by the way, August 6 is my birthday, and it would be a wonderful present for me to see a lot of finished stories available on Amazon with the recognition of being - hopefully - the first batch of many in the years to come...

  1. I'm nervous! I'm not a team of writers and editers and animators!! Scared!

  2. I hope now that I can finish the challenge. I burnt my left thumb, pretty badly. It was too painful to type with or do much of anything for a couple of days, but is somewhat better now. Can you tell us by what time tomorrow we must be finished? Is it 12:00 midnight? Also, I'm new to Kindle, have my novel and a short story up there, but I just went through the normal channels. How do we post to the free section?

  3. Love this idea! I came to the same conclusion myself almost a year ago and the journey it has taken me on has grown me as a writer more than I had believed it could. If you want to see the change check out 1storyaweek.com
